Grow a Garden Pet Mutations Guide: Mutation Machine, Odds & Best Results (2026)

How the Pet Mutation Machine works in Grow a Garden — Age 50 requirement, 500M Sheckle cost, every pet mutation's odds and effects, and which results are actually worth the gamble.

Crop mutations get most of the attention in Grow a Garden, but pets can mutate too — and a good pet mutation permanently upgrades an animal you've already invested weeks of leveling into. This guide covers exactly how the Pet Mutation Machine works, what each attempt really costs, the odds of every common result, and how to decide whether a roll is worth the risk.

How the Pet Mutation Machine Works

The Mutation Machine is located near the Egg Shop, and using it follows a simple sequence:

  1. Your pet must reach Age 50. Age is a pet's level — see our Pet Leveling Guide for how XP, hunger, and rarity affect how quickly a pet gets there
  2. Interact with the machine and place the pet inside
  3. Wait out the timer — each attempt takes 60 minutes, or you can skip the wait for 49 Robux
  4. Collect the result — the pet comes out with its new mutation, but its Age resets to 1

That last point is the real hidden cost. Age 50 can take anywhere from 5-10 days (optimized) to around 69 days (unoptimized) per our leveling breakdown, so every mutation attempt effectively resets a large chunk of progress on that specific pet.

What a Mutation Attempt Costs

Each attempt costs 500 million Sheckles — a late-game price by any measure, comparable to the very top of the gear catalog (see our Gear Guide and Sprinkler Guide for how that compares to other major purchases).

Critical rule: in most cases a pet can only hold one standard mutation, and applying a new one can replace the existing mutation. Putting an already-mutated pet back into the machine risks overwriting a result you liked — only re-roll a pet if its current mutation is genuinely worse than the average outcome.

Pet Mutation Odds and Effects

Odds vary slightly between community sources (and shift between game versions), so treat these as approximate ranges rather than exact figures:

MutationApprox. OddsEffect
Shiny~30–32%+15% XP per second
Inverted~15–16%+30% XP per second
Frozen~9%Every ~3 min, ~25% chance a nearby fruit becomes Frozen
Windy~9%Every ~5 min, ~25% chance a nearby fruit becomes Windstruck
Golden~6%+10% to the pet's passive ability
Mega~6%Giant pet; faster hunger; +10–40 XP per second
Tiny~6%Tiny pet; 20% slower hunger; +5–30 XP per second
Rainbow~3%+20% to the pet's passive ability
Ascended~0.32%Every 6 hours, turns a nearby fruit into Dawnbound (150×)

Why Ascended Is the Jackpot

Ascended is the rarest standard result at roughly 0.32%, and its effect is exceptional: roughly every 6 hours it can turn a nearby fruit into Dawnbound, which multiplies that fruit's value by 150× — the highest crop mutation currently available (see our Rarest Mutations ranking for how Dawnbound compares to Shocked, Celestial, and Voidtouched).

A 0.32% result at 500 million Sheckles per attempt means the expected cost of landing Ascended through repeated attempts on one pet is enormous. Realistically, treat Ascended as a lottery ticket you might hit along the way, not a target to budget for.

Which Mutation Is Best Depends on Your Pet

For a pet you'll keep in your main lineup: Rainbow (+20% passive) and Golden (+10% passive) are the strongest "stay in the lineup" results, because they directly improve the ability that made you choose the pet in the first place. A Rainbow Raccoon or Rainbow Kitsune stacks a real bonus onto an already top-tier ability — see our Pet Tier List for which pets are worth that investment.

For a pet you're mainly leveling or using as support: Shiny and Inverted boost XP gain per second. Inverted's +30% is double Shiny's +15%, which makes it the better pick if the pet's job is speeding up other leveling goals.

For crop-boosting utility: Frozen and Windy apply their respective crop mutations to nearby fruit on a timer. They're modest next to Ascended's 150×, but they provide steady, repeatable value — comparable in spirit to the reliable timed abilities covered in our Pet Abilities breakdown.

For hunger management: Tiny's 20% slower hunger rate quietly pairs with the hunger mechanic that otherwise caps XP gain, making it a practical (if unglamorous) choice for long sessions.

The Expected Cost of Chasing a Specific Result

Because every attempt is an independent roll, the average number of attempts needed to hit a result with probability p is roughly 1 ÷ p. Using the approximate odds above and the 500 million Sheckle price per attempt, the realistic cost of deliberately chasing each outcome looks like this:

Target ResultApprox. OddsAvg. Attempts NeededAvg. Sheckle CostAvg. Waiting Time
Shiny~31%~3~1.5 billion~3 hours
Golden~6%~17~8.5 billion~17 hours
Rainbow~3%~31~15.5 billion~31 hours
Ascended~0.32%~312~156 billion~13 days

These are statistical averages, not guarantees — you can hit Rainbow on attempt one or go well past 60 attempts without it. Two details change the math further: every attempt also resets Age to 1, so chasing a result means re-leveling the pet each time before the next roll, and a new mutation can overwrite the old one, so a lucky Golden can be erased by a follow-up roll.

The practical takeaway: for almost every player, mutating once or twice on a pet you're committed to long-term is reasonable, while deliberately chasing Rainbow or Ascended through repeated rolls is only realistic for players with an enormous Sheckle surplus. This is also why pets with a naturally strong ability are better targets than weak pets — a +20% passive on a great ability is far more valuable than the same bonus on a mediocre one.

Level 500 Pet Mutations

Since the pet level cap was raised from 100 to 500 in the Summer Camp Part 3 update, pets that reach Level 500 can access four additional mutation outcomes beyond the standard list. One reported result, Exalted, carries a high chance and adds roughly a 25% boost to the pet's passive along with extra XP benefits for other pets. These advanced results are only relevant to the small number of players who have fully leveled a pet that far, but they show the machine remains relevant deep into endgame progression.

Should You Use the Machine at All?

A practical decision framework before spending 500 million Sheckles:

  1. Is the pet already top-tier? Mutating a Kitsune, Raccoon, or similarly strong pet makes sense because the passive boost applies to an ability you actually rely on. Mutating a low-impact pet wastes both the Sheckle cost and the Age reset.
  2. Can you afford to lose the Age? The reset to Age 1 means the pet needs to be re-leveled before it's back to full strength. Do this with a pet you aren't relying on during the rebuild.
  3. Is the current mutation already good? If a pet already carries Rainbow or Golden, re-rolling risks replacing it with something weaker — usually not worth it.
  4. Does the average outcome help? Roughly 45% of rolls land on Shiny or Inverted, both modest XP bonuses. Only about 10% of rolls land on a high-value passive or crop-boosting result (Golden, Rainbow, Ascended). Be honest about whether you're rolling for the average result or chasing the tail.

Phoenix owners get one meaningful advantage here: its Bird of Rebirth ability gives pets pulled from the Mutation Machine a bonus of 1–4.89 age instead of resetting to age one — worth pairing if you're mutating frequently (see our Pet Tier List for Phoenix's full breakdown).

Common Pet Mutation Mistakes

Re-rolling a pet that already has a good result. Because a new mutation can replace the current one, putting a Rainbow or Golden pet back into the machine is a gamble where the most likely outcome (Shiny or Inverted) is a downgrade.

Mutating before the pet is worth it. Spending 500 million Sheckles and resetting Age on a weak pet gives you a slightly better version of a pet you probably won't keep. Decide the pet is a long-term lineup member first.

Ignoring hunger during the rebuild. After the Age reset, the pet has to climb back up through leveling, and hunger gates XP generation entirely at 0% (see our Pet Leveling Guide). A Tiny mutation's 20% slower hunger rate helps here, but any pet needs hunger managed to level at all.

Treating odds as exact. Sources disagree by a point or two on nearly every percentage in the table above because odds have shifted between game versions. Use them to understand relative likelihood, not to plan an exact budget.

Confusing pet mutations with crop mutations. A "Golden" pet is not producing Gold-mutated crops — Golden on a pet boosts its passive ability by about 10%, while Gold on a crop multiplies its sell value by 20×. They are entirely different systems.

Building Toward the Machine: A Realistic Plan

  1. Early game: Don't think about the machine yet. Focus on income, a first Bee, and basic leveling — see our Egg Guide for accessible early pets
  2. Mid game: Identify your one or two long-term lineup pets (use the Pet Tier List) and start leveling them toward Age 50 with managed hunger and XP-boosting pets
  3. Late game: Once you have 500 million Sheckles to spare and a pet at Age 50, make a first attempt on the pet whose ability matters most to your income
  4. Endgame: Only consider repeated rolls if your Sheckle income comfortably absorbs billions in expected cost

Pet Mutations vs. Crop Mutations

These are two entirely separate systems that share a name, which causes real confusion. Crop mutations (Gold, Rainbow, Shocked, and so on) multiply a harvested fruit's sell value and stack multiplicatively — see our Mutations Guide. Pet mutations modify the pet itself, usually boosting its passive, its XP gain, or giving it a timed ability to apply a crop mutation. A pet mutation never directly changes a pet's trading weight class, but it can change its demand and value in a trade — verify both before pricing a mutated pet with the Pet Weight Calculator and Trade Checker.

FAQ

What age must a pet be to use the Mutation Machine? Age 50.

How much does one attempt cost and how long does it take? 500 million Sheckles and 60 minutes, or 49 Robux to skip the wait.

What happens to my pet's Age after mutating? It resets to 1, so the pet has to be re-leveled.

Can I re-roll a pet that already has a mutation? Yes, but in most cases a new mutation replaces the old one, so only re-roll if the current result is weaker than the average outcome.

What's the rarest pet mutation? Ascended, at roughly 0.32% — it turns a nearby fruit into Dawnbound (150×) about every 6 hours.

Which mutation should I want for my main lineup pet? Rainbow (+20% passive) or Golden (+10% passive), since both strengthen the ability you're already relying on.

Do pet mutations affect trading value? They can change demand and price, but weight class is a separate factor — check both before agreeing to a trade.

How many attempts does it take to land Rainbow? On average around 30 at roughly 3% odds — about 15 billion Sheckles and over a day of cumulative waiting, though individual results vary widely.

Is Tiny or Mega better? Tiny slows hunger by 20% and adds a smaller XP bonus; Mega speeds hunger by 20% but adds a larger XP bonus. Tiny suits long sessions and AFK leveling, Mega suits active play where you can keep the pet fed.

Why do pet mutation odds differ between guides? Odds have been adjusted between game versions and sources round differently, so expect differences of a point or two on most percentages.

Does the Mutation Machine reset anything besides Age? Age resets to 1; the pet itself and its weight class stay the same, and Phoenix's Bird of Rebirth can soften the reset with a 1–4.89 age bonus.
