Grow a Garden Ascension & Tier 2 Seed Shop Guide: Garden Coins Explained (2026)

How Garden Ascension works in Grow a Garden — the 1 trillion Sheckle cost, 10 Garden Coins per ascension, what resets, and how to unlock and spend Garden Coins in Sam's Tier 2 Seed Shop.

#garden ascension#garden coins#tier 2 seed shop#sam friendship#cocomango#late game

Two of Grow a Garden's most confusing late-game systems are really one connected loop: Garden Ascension is how you earn Garden Coins, and Garden Coins are the only currency accepted in Sam's Tier 2 Seed Shop, which itself is locked behind NPC friendship. Most guides explain each piece separately, so players end up unsure what to do first. This guide walks through the whole chain in order, with the real costs, requirements, and trade-offs.

The Big Picture

The loop works like this:

  1. Feed Sam daily to build friendship — this unlocks the Tier 2 shop
  2. Ascend your garden (1 trillion Sheckles) to earn Garden Coins
  3. Spend Garden Coins in Sam's Tier 2 Seed Shop on seeds you can't buy with Sheckles anywhere else

Skipping any step blocks the others: friendship without Garden Coins gives you an empty shop, and Garden Coins without friendship give you currency with nowhere to spend it. Because friendship is slow and Ascension is expensive, the smart move is to progress both in parallel.

What Is Garden Ascension?

Garden Ascension is a late-game feature, introduced with the Fairy Update, that works like a rebirth system. You trade a huge pile of Sheckles for a small amount of a special currency.

  • Cost: 1,000,000,000,000 Sheckles (1 trillion) plus a random mutated fruit
  • Reward: 10 Garden Coins per successful ascension
  • Cooldown: once every 24 hours
  • What resets: your Sheckles only — you keep your garden, plants, pets, and gear

That last point matters. Ascension isn't a prestige wipe: your farm stays intact, so the "cost" is simply spending a trillion Sheckles you already earned. For a player whose income is already in the billions per session (see our Most Profitable Seeds guide and Sprinkler Guide for how late-game income scales), a trillion is a long-term target rather than an impossible one — but it is a real commitment, since the Sheckles are gone after each ascension.

The Mutated Fruit Requirement

Each ascension also consumes a random mutated fruit, which makes your mutation farming directly relevant to Garden Coin income. You don't need a high-end mutation — a modest mutated crop from normal farming is enough to satisfy the requirement — but you do need to keep one on hand when you're ready to ascend. See our Mutations Guide for the mutations you'll most commonly pick up while farming.

Why the 24-Hour Cooldown Shapes Everything

You can ascend at most once per day, which caps Garden Coin income at 10 coins per 24 hours, no matter how rich you are. That cap is the real limiter on the Tier 2 shop: even with unlimited Sheckles, you can't buy out the shop faster than the cooldown allows.

How to Unlock the Tier 2 Seed Shop

The Tier 2 shop is a second shop tab inside Sam's Friendship Shop, unlocked through Sam's friendship level, not through Sheckles.

  • Reaching Friendship Level 2 with Sam unlocks the Tier 2 Seed Shop
  • That level requires 15 friendship points
  • You can feed Sam only once every 24 hours

How Sam's Points Work

Sam awards points based on the rarity of the cooked food you feed him:

Food RarityPoints Per Feeding
Common1
Uncommon2
Rare3
Legendary4
Mythical5
Divine6
Prismatic7
Transcendent8

Since feeding is capped at once per day, the rarity of your food directly controls how many days it takes to reach 15 points:

Food You Feed DailyDays to Reach 15 Points
Common (1/day)15 days
Uncommon (2/day)8 days
Legendary (4/day)4 days
Mythical (5/day)3 days
Divine (6/day)3 days
Transcendent (8/day)2 days

This is the single most useful takeaway for speeding up the unlock: upgrading the rarity of what you cook cuts the wait dramatically. A player feeding Common dishes needs over two weeks; a player feeding Mythical dishes needs three days. See our Cooking Recipes Guide for how swapping in rarer crops raises a dish's rarity, and our NPC Friendship Guide for how the daily feeding window works across Sam, Eloise, and Giant.

Getting Access to the Cooking Kit First

Because Sam's points come from cooked food, you need a Cooking Kit before any of this starts. The kit can be earned by completing common achievements in the Garden Guide tab, or bought outright — the full unlock path is covered in our Cooking Recipes Guide.

What the Tier 2 Seed Shop Sells

The Tier 2 shop stocks a small, fixed lineup of seeds, each purchased with Garden Coins. Prices are reported slightly differently between sources (they appear to have been adjusted over time), so treat the lower and upper figures below as a range and confirm the current price in-game:

SeedRarityGarden Coin CostFriendship Requirement
BroccoliLegendary~1–2 coinsLevel 2
PotatoMythical~2–3 coinsLevel 2
Brussels SproutDivine~6 coinsHigher level
CocomangoPrismatic~7 coinsLevel 3 (reported around 60 points)

Two things to note about the friendship requirement for Cocomango: it needs Level 3, and sources disagree on the exact point total — some list roughly 60 points, which is higher than the 50-point maximum we cite for Sam's earlier levels in our NPC guide. Because the game's numbers have shifted between updates, check Sam's in-game friendship bar for the current threshold instead of relying on any single figure.

How Many Ascensions Does It Take?

Using the reported prices, buying one of every Tier 2 seed costs roughly 16–18 Garden Coins. Since each ascension yields 10, that works out to about two ascensions — meaning roughly two trillion Sheckles and at least two days (given the 24-hour cooldown) to afford the full lineup once.

GoalApprox. Garden CoinsAscensions Needed
Broccoli only1–21
Broccoli + Potato3–51
Add Brussels Sprout~9–111–2
One of every seed~16–182

Because the shop sells seeds rather than permanent upgrades, you may want to buy multiples of the best seed once you've decided which one actually fits your farm — which means the real long-term cost is higher than the one-of-each total above.

A Realistic Parallel Progression Plan

Because friendship and Ascension are both gated by a once-per-day limit, the efficient approach is to run them side by side rather than one after the other. Here's a sensible order for a player who isn't yet close to a trillion Sheckles:

  1. Get the Cooking Kit and start feeding Sam every single day. Even Common food builds toward the 15-point unlock, and the habit costs almost nothing.
  2. Upgrade your food rarity gradually. As you farm better crops (see our Fastest Growing Seeds guide for early-game volume and our Most Profitable Seeds guide for later options), slot them into your daily dish so each feeding earns more points.
  3. Reach Friendship Level 2 — this opens the Tier 2 shop, so Garden Coins have somewhere to go before you earn any.
  4. Build toward your first ascension by scaling income with sprinklers and mutation farming. Keep a mutated fruit in reserve the whole time so you're never blocked at the last step.
  5. Ascend and spend. Your first 10 coins comfortably cover Broccoli and Potato; a second ascension a day later gets you into the Divine and Prismatic seeds.

The timeline for steps 1–3 is only days if you cook rare food and weeks if you cook Common food, which is exactly why food rarity matters so much here. Steps 4–5 depend entirely on your income, since the trillion Sheckles is the real bottleneck.

What to Do With Tier 2 Seeds

The seeds you buy with Garden Coins are tools for the same goals as every other seed: income and mutation value. A few practical notes:

  • Check whether each seed is multi-harvest or single-harvest before committing plot space, since that determines whether one purchase keeps paying you or needs replanting (the trade-off is explained in our Most Profitable Seeds guide).
  • Use the Seed Profit Calculator to compare a Tier 2 seed against what you already grow before giving it prime sprinkler coverage.
  • Prismatic and Divine seeds make excellent cooking ingredients, which loops back into Sam's friendship points — a high-rarity crop raises your dish rarity, which raises your daily feeding points. See the cooking section above and our Cooking Recipes Guide.

Is Ascension Worth a Trillion Sheckles?

The honest answer depends on what the Tier 2 seeds are worth to you:

It makes sense if: your income is already large enough that a trillion Sheckles is a few sessions of earnings, and the seeds (especially the Prismatic Cocomango) give you something you can't otherwise get. Garden Coins also convert a surplus of Sheckles — which otherwise has diminishing uses once you own your preferred gear — into something new.

It doesn't make sense if: a trillion Sheckles would otherwise fund meaningful upgrades. Compare the cost against what you'd get from the top-tier gear covered in our Gear Guide, or from rare-pet and egg spending covered in our Egg Guide and Rarest Pets ranking. If a purchase there improves your income more than a Tier 2 seed would, spend there first.

Common Mistakes

Ascending before you have a use for the coins. If Sam's friendship isn't at Level 2 yet, your Garden Coins just sit there. Build friendship first, ascend second.

Feeding Common food when a rarer option is available. The daily cap on feedings means every day you feed a low-rarity dish is a day of wasted progress — a Mythical dish is worth five times a Common one for the same single daily feeding.

Forgetting the mutated fruit. The trillion Sheckles aren't the only requirement. Make sure you've kept a mutated crop before you start.

Confusing Garden Ascension with a full reset. It resets only your Sheckles, so there's no reason to fear losing your garden — but also no reason to treat it as a free reroll of your progress.

Assuming prices never change. Garden Coin costs and friendship thresholds have been reported differently across sources, so confirm each number in-game before committing a day's ascension to a specific purchase plan.

FAQ

What does Garden Ascension cost? 1 trillion Sheckles plus a random mutated fruit.

How many Garden Coins do I get per ascension? 10 Garden Coins.

How often can I ascend? Once every 24 hours.

Do I lose my garden when I ascend? No — only your Sheckles reset. Your garden, pets, and gear stay.

How do I unlock the Tier 2 Seed Shop? Reach Friendship Level 2 with Sam, which requires 15 friendship points earned by feeding him cooked food once per day.

What's the fastest way to reach 15 friendship points? Feed Sam the rarest cooked food you can make — a Mythical dish earns 5 points per day (3 days), while a Common dish earns 1 point per day (15 days).

What does the Tier 2 shop sell? Broccoli (Legendary), Potato (Mythical), Brussels Sprout (Divine), and Cocomango (Prismatic), all bought with Garden Coins.

Do I need to unlock Friendship Level 2 before I start ascending? Not technically — you can earn Garden Coins any time you meet the Sheckle requirement — but the coins are only useful once the Tier 2 shop is unlocked, so it's most efficient to reach Level 2 first.

Can I buy the same Tier 2 seed more than once? Yes, the shop sells seeds, so you can spend additional Garden Coins on multiples once you decide which seed suits your farm.

Why do Garden Coin prices differ between guides? Costs appear to have been adjusted over time, and sources round or update at different moments. Treat published numbers as a range and confirm the current price in the shop.

What happens to my pets and gear when I ascend? Nothing — only Sheckles reset, so your pets, gear, and garden stay as they were.
